Session 4 - Question 3

Would you recommend this book to others in education? Why or Why not?

  1. I liked Chapter 13 for educators and parents. It explains the limits of using standardized testing for finding the IQ of a child. We will not measure a gifted IQ, as such intelligence meets the "ceiling". I find that diagnosticians in school districts are unconcerned about this lack of accuracy. Or, perhaps, it just is out of their control.
I do think gifted parents should be appraised, and informed, and this book would help.

  2. Having the priviledge of being both, a parent of a gifted child and a teacher, I would definitely recomend this book to both.
Personaly as a parent I disagree with some of the proposed approaches on Chapter 3, but I still found the information incredibly valuable and helpful on the understanding of how my child is and what I can do as a parent to guide her way.
As a teacher I also found many resources to help both my gifted students as well as their parents; specially the fact that as a teacher I must not assume anything about a gifted child, I should approach them with efforts to develop their strenghts and support them with their needs.

  3. I would recommend this book to teachers and parents of gifted students. I feel like it really informs the reader about every aspect of giftedness and then gives suggestions and strategies to use on the kids. It's practical and gives a lot of insight into the gifted child. The more that we know about of children and students the more that we can help them succeed.

  4. I would definitely recommend this book to parents of gifted children and gifted individuals. I think it is a wonderful guide to giftedness and what it entitles. I found it very useful for myself and I'm sure that the information in it will be also very useful to my gifted parents.
The only thing I dislike is the over-repetition of the same ideas or concepts among chapters or within the same chapter, which I found meaningless. I preferred the checklists, tables and chapters with lots of concrete information and less repetition.

  5. Response to Adriana: I agree with you that this book is a good reminder for us as teachers about the fact that we shouldn't assume things about our gifted students and that we should take the time to understand them so we can approach them in the best possible manner to meet their needs and develop their potential.

  6. PV: I truly believe that this book is beneficial to both educators and parents. Tt provides a better understanding of giftedness and offers some useful strategies/interventions despite certain limitations within the educational system.

  7. I would recommend the book to parents, but I wouldn't recommend it to educators. There are parts that are good for educators to read, but as a whole the book describes many things that are outside the educator's realm. I also didn't like the constant repetition of topics. If this was meant to be read as a collection of articles, that would be acceptable, but the book doesn't flow well as a comprehensive whole.

  8. response to OlvaradoA: I agree that the book was repetitive in places. Perhaps I found some areas more interesting than other parents and educators, though.

  9. Yes, I would reommend the book mainly to parents of gifted children and those teachers who teach them. It would give parents/teachers a guide to what's going on with their child and also some insights to problems that might occur thoughout the years. Great book.

  10. I would highly recommend this book to educators as well as parents. I feel that every bit of information out there is important. It may not fit every child and of course it doesn’t, but as a teacher, at some point you may run across someone who fits these categories. As a teacher for 22 years, I can now look back and think of students who definitely had other areas of concern that were not appropriately discovered earlier. I also think the strategies provided were extremely helpful. The notes I took form the book will be put to use.It was a great book.
